Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born 9 August 1963 into an incredibly musical family from Newark New Jersey is the daughter of Gospel star Cissy Houston as well as John Russell Houston Jr. She's also the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. As a child she was a singer in the New Hope Baptist Church choir in Newark. When she was 15, Houston had sung professionally as a backing vocalist with her mother in Chaka Khan's hit song in 1978 Im Every Woman. Later, she provided background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls and even her mother. The high quality of her performance as the lead vocalist in New York funk group Material attracted the attention of several big record companies, like Arista who she signed in 1982 and was with them for the rest of her career. In 1985, Whitney Houston's debut album became one of the most successful debut albums ever. Several hit singles including Saving All My Love For You How Can I Tell You If That You Love Me and The Greatest Love of All were released on the album. They set the stage for her to beat the Beatles with seven consecutive US top 10s. The album itself sold 3 million copies during its debut season in the US and then went on to sell 25 million worldwide winning her the first of her six Grammys. Its Whitney 1987 release, which included The album's tracks, such as Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as popular songs, was a way to build on the success she had achieved. However, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard sealed her spot in the top 20 most-sellers in history. Though the movie was not very well received, nor did her performance, but the soundtrack to her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You was able to reach the top spot on both the singles and album charts across the US for a period of time. She sold 44,000,000 copies. In the same year, she got married to Bobby Brown who was a previous New Edition singer. She was the sole daughter of Bobby and Bobbi Kristina Brown in the month of March, 1993. At this point, her documented substance abuse began and by 1996, she had been using drugs on a daily basis.
