Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. Her performance as a singer, music, film and TV artist has garnered her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents are Lancelot as well as Rita Owens. They were both Police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked in Irvington High School. Their divorce occurred when Latifah was ten. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She went to at the Baptist church. In her early twenties, her cousin gave her the stage name Latifah that means tender and gentle in Arabic. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward on her basketball team in high school. She performed the hit song Home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah started to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's original group, made up of several MCs as well as DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He gave it back to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The track caught the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and in 1988 issued her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
